Abstract

Refractory status epilepticus is defined as a condition in which seizures persist despite treatment with benzodiazepines and other antiepileptic drugs, and superrefractory status as one in which seizures persist after the use of anesthetic agents for more than 24 hours. Any form of epileptic status should be treated promptly to prevent morbidity and mortality; however, the evidence available to support the choice of a specific treatments is scarce. Hypothermia can be a safe and useful treatment to manage these patients. We report the case of a 14-year old patient with super-refractory status epilepticus, which was successfully treated with therapeutic hypothermia.
