Abstract

At the beginning of pregnancy feto-matemal metabolism is anabolic. It is based on glucose utilization.lnsuline keeps its activity and progresi vely raises under the stimulus of placental steroids. This is an important factor in inducing energetic storage of carbohidrates and lipids. At the end of pregnancy, fetal metabolismcontinues being anabolic to support tissue and organ development. Glucose continues being the main fuel. On the other side, matemal metabolism is now catabdic to permit glucose transfer through tha placenta toward the fetus. Maternal metabolism changes to lipids as main fuel source. Insuline resistance favors glucose displacement toward fetus.Distorsion in maternal homeostasis, in case (f diabetes, brings about matemal, fetal, neonatal and metabolic complications.
