ncidence of early gastric cancer in Costa Rica, results of a five-year period in Hospitals of the Metropolitan Area

Between 1986 and 1990, a total of 1536 patients with endoscopic and pathological diagnosis of gastric cancer were submitted to resection surgery and it was found 103 of those patients with an early neoplasia located to mucosa or submucosa of the gastric wall, with an incidence of 6.7% for the whole series. That diagnosis was confirmed with the histopathological study of the resected stomachs. The neoplasias were found in male and 37 female adults. The average age of onset was about 65 years of age. The intestinal type or differentiated type of tumour was the main histologic feature seen, and above 51% of cases were located along the antro-pyloric region.
According with our experience, and possibilities the endoscopic test is the first choice. However, unfortunately there has not been an increased in the percentage diagnosis of early neoplasia. So, it is concluded to implement the massive hematological new techniques for screening high risk population to develope that neoplasia
