Embryogenesis of the coronary artery system

One of the primary characteristics of the cardiac development is the promptness with which the coronary ciculation is established during the embryonic stage.
The presence of coronary arteries has been determined during the transition from the sixth to the seventh week of development. The arteries appear as a angioblastic outbreak that once established, extend through the epicardium of the forming heart.
The study of twelve embryos of six, seven and eight weeks, trated with hematoxylin-eosin ancl cut in a serial, transversal and longitudinal way, proved the presence of coronary vessels. The areas corresponding to the atrioventricular ancl intraventricular septums up to the apex, as well as the opening of the superior caval vein of the obtuse and acute borders, were searched for coronary vessels.
In conclusion, all the main branches of the coronary arteries typical of the adult heart are practically represented by the ninth week or the embryonic development.
