he phaeohyphomycosis (leucohyphomycosis / mycotic cyst) is a mycosis thar affects skin and subcutaneous tissue with an extensive geographic distribution. The etiology mainly given by dematiaceous fungus (phaeohyphomycosis). However, there have been some cases of mycotic cysts given by eumycetos mucedinaceous (leucohyphomycosis). The histopathologic presentation is highly characteristic of mycotic infection. The central region of the abscess shows a suppurative necrosis. In the outer layers, there is a histiocytary region surrounded by a fi- 0, brous capsule. The final diagnosis is supported by the identification ofparasitical structures in the infected tissue and in the isolation through culture in adequate mediums ofthe agent responsible of the injury. The present was stress the epidemiologic and histopathologic aspects of 5 new cases studied in the south of Costa Rica; such cases confirm the importance of the histopathologic study as a diagnostic tood, since the fastidious, behavior of this fungus.
