Abstract

Justification: The interhospitalary ambulance flights are relatively frequent in our country. However there is no adequate record of this activity.

Objective: To present a descriptive statistical analysis of the air transport of patients during the last years within the country.

Method: A retrospective biostatistical analysis of patients between september 1993 and september 1996. Two complementary questionaires were used for the study, and four flight data books commonly used in aviation in order to gather the information. Variables included name, identification number, sex, origin hospital, destination hospital, first diagnose, clinical condition, number of companions, type of aircraft, time of flight, airport, date, and day of the flight.

Results: 1102 patiensts were transfered, 52% of them were men mainly under 40 years the Other main group were children. Gynecobstetrics and neonatology constiute the specialities of major reference (19% esch one). 82% of the patients were in stable condition and only 2% in critical condition. Most of the patients came from Hospital de Ciudad Neily. The main destination hospital was Hospital San Juan de Dios, follewed by Hospital Nacional de Niños. The global mortality during transfers was of 7 patients (0.6%).

Conclusion: It's necessary the implementation of an adequate system of medical records for this population. Likewise, it's necessary the implementation of quality control systems for thid activity.
