Abstract

Four cases of subacute necrotizing lymphadenitis (KikuchiFujimoto disease) in Costa Rica are described. The four cases presented in young women (20-44 years old) as a lymphadenopathy. Three of them associated fever and weigh

loss; all showed leukopenia. One case additionally presented rash, polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia, hypoalbuminemia, several autoantibodies and different antibodies against external antigens, compatible with systemic lupus erithematosus. Lymph node biopsies in all four cases revealed subacute necrotizing lymphadenitis, in its different stages: proliferative, necrotizing or xanthomatous. Although a viral origin seems the best possibility, the etiology of Kikuchi -Fujimoto disease has not been established with certainty.
