Coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death in Costa Rica and the prevalence is increasing. An analysis of the main clinical characteristics and mayor coronary risk factors of patients with coronary atherosclerosis including survivors of myocardial infarction or revascularization procedures who were attended at the Cardiac Rehabilitation Clinic (CENARE e INCIENSA) during 1993 to 1996 is presented here. Mayor coronary risk factors were history of smoking, dyslipidemia, type 2 diabetes mellitus and systemic hypertension. The lipid profile showed that 80 per cent of the patients had LDL cholesterol concentrations above 100 mg/dl. Recommendations are made to establish country wide programs to unify treatment criteria to modify coronary risk factors, in particular, the abnormal lipid profile, common in such patients, aimed to reduce subsequent coronary events.
