Abstract

This paper reports an analysis of discharges for female breast tumors at the Social Security hospitals in Costa Rica. In 1997, a total of 1395 discharges were registered and analyzed. Among this total, 578 were due to benign tumors and 818 were due to malign disease. In 540 out of 578 with benign tumors, diagnostic surgical procedures were the done. Among 818 with malignant tumors, 139 were hospitalized for diagnostic surgical procedures, 346 for therapeutic surgical procedures (mastectomy, all
types) and 332 were hospitalized for follow-up, medical treat-
ment, complications and Other comorbilities. Generally speak-
ing, the global results allow to conclude that management of this
type ofpatients can be improved. Also, the health care provided
is concentrated in national general hospitals, and all of them
seem to have the capacity needed to satisfy the actual health care
demand in these diseases.
