As a consequence of the growing problem of depression and suicide in children and adolescents, as well as its relation with other behavioral and academic disorders, it is important to deeply explore this phenomena. The goal of this study is to validate the Children Depression Inventory for Costa Rica. The instrument was administrated to 727 students from 8 to 19 years
old and to 97 depressive patients of the same age group. The results showed a high indexe of internal and temporal reliability, which means that the inventory is homogeneous and consistent in time. In addition it was found that almost one of every ten students presented enough depressive symptoms to be evaluated and possibly treated. It is recommended further to deeply explore this matter in the population, to increase social concern on this subject and to train parents and teachers.
