Central mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the mandible in a patient with mandibular cystic fibrous dysplasia

Mucoepidermoid carcinomas of the salivary glands arefrequent lesions that account for 15% of all salivary glandtumors, they are very infrequent in the mandible, with lessthan 200 cases reported and known as central mucoepider-moide carcinoma. The pathogenesis of this intraosseoustumor is still controversial. Several theories of their patho-genesis have been postulated: 1) entrapment of retromolarmucous glands within the mandible, 2) maxilla sinusepithe-lium, 3) iatrogenic entrapment of minor salivary glands(chronic osteomielitis or sinusitis, 4) dental lamina rem-nants, 5) developmentally included embryonic remnants of submandibular glands within the mandible, 6) neoplastictransformation of mucus-secreting cells in the epitheliallining of odontogenic cysts.
We present the case of man with a central mucoepider-moide carcinoma and review of the literature of this uncom-mon condition.
