Abstract

The heptavalent S. pneumoniaeconjugate vaccine hasshown to be safe and effective in preventing pediatric inva-sive infections and otitis media caused by S. pneumoniae.The routine use of these vaccines has dramatically reducedthe incidence of invasive pneumococcal diseases in childrenyounger than 2 years old and because of a reduction incolonization of the children's nasopharynx, the transmis-sion from child to adult has been reduced and the number of secondary S. pneumoniaeinfections in adults. Anotherbenefit of the routine use of this vaccine has been the reduc-tion of vaccine-type antimicrobial resistant strains. Basedon the S. pneumoniaeserotype distribution in Costa Rica,the predicted vaccine protection is calculated in 74%.
