Abstract

Introduction: Virtual consultation emerged as an alternative to ensure continuity of health care during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially for patients with chronic non-communicable diseases. Objective: To evaluate the quality of virtual consultation in patients with chronic non-communicable diseases in the San Rafael Health Area, Puntarenas, Costa Rica. Methods: A mixed-methods observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted. Structured surveys were administered to patients diagnosed with arterial hypertension and/or type 2 diabetes mellitus, as well as to medical staff involved in the virtual consultations. Results: Most patients reported high overall satisfaction (average 8.7/10). Clarity of communication was highlighted by 91% of respondents, and friendliness of staff by 93%. Weaknesses included the absence of video calls, technical difficulties, and limitations in performing physical examinations. Conclusions: Virtual consultation proved to be an effective strategy during the health emergency and could be maintained as a complementary modality for the follow-up of stable chronic patients, provided that technological and operational aspects are strengthened.
