Abstract

Tubo-ovarian abscess is a polymicrobial infectious mass, usually produced as a complication of pelvic inflammatory disease. It is a morbidity with a high impact on the health and lives of the women who suffer from it; therefore, its prevention, diagnosis, and appropriate treatment are imperative to reduce possible outcomes and sequelae, such as infertility, ectopic pregnancy, chronic pelvic pain, sepsis, and even death. We report a case of acute abdomen caused by the presence of a right tubo-ovarian abscess in a 31-year-old woman who had been an intrauterine device user for approximately 13 years. She consulted for abdominal and lumbar pain, scant vaginal bleeding and vomiting. The diagnosis was determined by imaging tests and she underwent a laparotomy with right unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, removal of the intrauterine device and appendectomy. Postoperative evolution was satisfactory.
