Resumen

El sarampión es una de las enfermedades infecciosas prevenibles mediante vacunación, de mayor contagiosidad. En la era prevacunación, la tasa de ataque más alta ocurría entre los 5 y 9 años, sin embargo, actualmente los infantes y niños pequeños destacan entre los grupos etarios más afectados. Según la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), en 2015 el sarampión produjo 134200 fallecimientos en el mundo (367 muertes por día, 15 fallecidos por hora).1  En 2016, el 85% de la población infantil recibió al menos una dosis de vacuna de sarampión al año de edad, y durante 2000- 2015, la vacunación previno alrededor de 20,3 millones de fallecimientos, convirtiéndose esta en una de las mejores inversiones en salud pública
